Inlays and Onlays in Burnaby
Inlays and Onlays
In some situations, a filling does not offer enough coverage or support for a damaged tooth. In these cases, an inlay or onlay can be secured to the tooth to ensure a more robust and stable solution. Inlays and onlays are often used in the case of large cavities. With excellent care and maintenance, and inlay or onlay can last many years.
Differences Between Fillings and Inlays/Onlays
Unlike fillings, in which the filling material (such as composite resin or amalgam) is applied directly to the tooth, inlays and onlays are created outside the mouth and applied to the tooth. This results in a more stable and lasting structure than fillings. While fillings may need to be replaced after 10-15 years, and inlay or onlay can last up to 25 years.
Placing an Inlay or Onlay
Inlays are designed to fill the spaces between the cusps (the ridges) of the molars, repairing smaller areas of damage, while onlays may include the cusps and are appropriate for cavities that affect a larger portion of the tooth. The process of placing an inlay or onlay requires two appointments; the first will be used to create a mold for the creation of the onlay or inlay. At the second appointment, the restoration will be applied to the tooth and secured in place.
