Root Canals in Burnaby
Root Canal Therapy
A root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp inside a tooth’s roots becomes infected. Infected root canals require immediate treatment to ensure that the infection doesn’t spread to other teeth or to other parts of the body. Treatment ensures that the natural tooth can remain in the mouth (often supported by a dental crown), preserving the bite.
How Infections in the Tooth Roots Can Be Detected
An infection in the tooth roots is often signalled by constant and severe pain in the tooth or gums, which may spread down to the neck, jaw, or ear. Swelling, sensitivity, pain when chewing, and a bitter taste in the mouth can also be signs of a tooth infection. If you begin to feel these symptoms, be sure to reach out to our dentists immediately to discuss your symptoms. If necessary, we can book you an emergency appointment for root canal therapy.
The Process of Root Canal Therapy
During a root canal treatment, a dentist will drill a hole into the top of the tooth to access the tooth roots. Once the infected pulp inside the root canals has been cleared out, the roots are filled and the hole in the tooth is sealed. A tooth that has had a root canal treatment typically requires a dental crown to strengthen and secure the natural tooth.
